My Thoughts on TOC.
TOC is one of those must go to events for me. It is where I feel I can
go and see those unbelts who want to impress, be noticed or just meet
Knights. It is one of those places where you can get to meet the
Knights better and learn. If you are a squire and want to try to get to
that next level (whatever it might be depending on where you are at),
or if you are not a squire and are looking for a Knight to get closer
to. Or course you can do the impress and be noticed thing by doing well
in crown but everyone is focused on crown and not learning or getting
to know the fighters better.

It is also a place where I can get to see my brother Knights. We all
push ourselves at TOC. There are usually so many fighters that it is a
grueling day for us.

What do we look for at TOC? Each Knight looks for something different.
If i had to break it down I would say Fire and Prowess. Even if someone
isn't as skilled as they want to be they can still have that fire in
their belly and light in their eyes that they love this, want more and
want to take it to us. This is the fighters chance to look for and take
down Knights that might be on their "list", it is also the chance to
see what Knights might catch their eye if they are not squired.

Do we notice those fighters who are not there who we think should be?
Yup, we do, and we talk about it. We even notice those Knights who we
think should be and are not. Do we take ourselves to task over it. Yes.
We judge both.

This year there will also be a Northern War Muster the day after at the
same site. The North is very serious about War and this is just another
chance for us to practice our skills as the Hammer of the Atlantian
Army.

I look forward to everyone who can make it this Saturday; I will miss
those who can not.

Sir Guy

PS. For Blackstone Raids, the King done call very often. How cool is it
to answer that call and be able to fight at his side in a foreign land?

The Atlantian Northern Army will be showing at Blackstone Raids
Well since the word is out on Blackstone Raids. I will add the call from the North.

Duke Badouin, Legatus Legionis and Commander of the Atlantian Northern Army (of Darkness) (Legio del Tenebras Borealis (Northern Army of Darkness in Latin) ) aka Grand Army of the Potomac is sending out his three Horsemen, Sir Tascius, Sir Theron and Baron Maximilian, the  Tribuni Angusticlavi or his army,  to gather the Army of the North to answer the Atlantian Heirs call to arms for BlackStone Raids (Apr 24-27).  I have listed the areas that the horsemen are covering.

Sir Tascius, Tribunus Angusticlavus: Northern Cluster: Highland
Foorde, Bright Hills, Lochmere, Wulfshaven, Sir Tascius and our Mercenary Liaison
Sir Theron,Tribunus Angusticlavus: Central Cluster: Dun Carraig,
Storvik, Spiaggia Levantina, Blackspear
Baron Max, Tribunus Angusticlavus Southern Cluster: Ponte Alto, Roxbury
Mill, Stierbach , Consortium.

We are asking that all of the North bring banners for their units and do their best to have some sort of heraldry on your people even if it is a simple sash.

This will the first chance this War season (other than Gulf) for the North to fight as an organized Army for a grand purpose.  I picture a sea of fighters in support of their Kingdom washing over our Foes.

I remain

Sir Guy, Praefectus Castrorum of the Legio del Tenebras Borealis and servant of his Grace, Badouin, Legatus Legionis.

ps.  I am still looking for someone to help organize our Logistics Train, a Copiis Militaribus (Logistics Lead).  HIs Grace has some ideas to help support the Army and this position would be a great help

Nothern Army Stuff Crossposted.
Though 'twas not St. Crispin's day, it was the day before St Patrick's
day (close enough for government work), and those who chose to stay a-
bed instead of sallying forth in glorious support of Barony,
Household, Army, and Kingdom should indeed hold their Personhood
cheap, for yea did we raise forth a great host of grizzled and veteran
warriors who trained tirelessly and fought fiercely throughout the
long day in the bitter wind and cold with great and demonstrated
improvement in skill and capabilities of our units and Army!

Dukes Badouin and Richard; Sirs Vladimir, Tascius, Eldrid, Grethferth,
Guy, and Strykar; our ferocious Mercenary friends such as the
Galatians; and all those new and seasoned, from close and afar.  All
put forth an effort in training and fighting that shall help form the
foundation from whence shall flow the future deeds of martial victory
and glory.

Thanks to all who took the time and effort to help make the War
Practice a smashing success (pun intended).  We had over thirty
fighters in armor, working specific melee skills across a number of
drill stations and scenarios and then practicing those melee skills in
resurrection and open field battles.  There was very obvious
significant improvement in the skills worked-on through the drills
throughout the day, so significant thanks to all the fighters and
trainers who made such progress possible.  Reports-back were of a
great-time, lots of fighting, lots of learning, and lots of positive
momentum and growth of the Army.

While we missed those in our core units who could not attend, we are
extremely grateful to those who could, and are hopeful that those who
could not will make a greater effort for the next War Practice (and to
arrive on-time).  In particular, I hope the authorized fighters of
Ponte Alto, Stierbach, and Roxbury Mills will continue to make a
greater effort to turnout for Northern Army practices.  You *are* your
units and your units *need* your support!  The Army is growing and
improving and it is looking to its seasoned veterans.  *Please* make
every effort possible to show-up and put on your armor to train with
your units, as you are *sorely* missed!  Don't miss any opportunity to
become a better warrior, part of a force for mayhem and brutality for
the greater glory of Atlantia, or just to get out there and do lots of
fighting with a bunch of fun and skilled fighters!!!

Again, I would sincerely and truly like to thank each and everyone of
those who attended, taught, and trained at the War Practice and helped
make it a great success.  We will continue to hold more such practices
as the year continues, and I hope that more of Atlantia's great Army
will attend so that we may sharpen our melee skills to a damascene-
like edge to slice through enemy shieldwalls with impunity.

In gratitude and service,
Baron Maximilian Von Halstern

Northern Army and Gulf Wars (Combat Archers and Siege
His Grace, Duke Badouin as the Warlord and Legatus Legionis for the
North has delegated command of the Northern Army to Sir Theron,Tribunus
Angusticlavus: Central Cluster of the North.  Sir Theron will be in
charge of the North during Gulf Wars.  Lord Gregor von Leipzig as our
Archery Primus for the North will be in charge of the Archers and any
Siege Weapons that show.  I would further encourage any Combat Archers
or Siege Crews that are attending Gulf from any region to contact
Gregor as he will be your liaison as well.

I would request that anyone in the Northern Army who is attending Gulf
Wars and is either in the North or who would like to fight with the
North to contact either Sir Theron, or your Tribunus (listed below),
your Tribunus will pass your name up.  Either is fine, but passing your
name up the chain gives us a better idea at every level who is
attending Gulf.

Contacts---

Sir Tascius, Tribunus Angusticlavus: Northern Cluster: Highland Foorde,
Bright Hills, Lochmere, Wulfshaven, Sir Tascius will also be our
be our Mercenary Liason.

Sir Theron,Tribunus Angusticlavus: Central Cluster: Dun Carraig,
Storvik, Spiaggia Levantina, Blackspear

Baron Max, Tribunus Angusticlavus Southern Cluster: Ponte Alto, Roxbury
Mill, Stierbach , Consortium.

Lord Gregor von Leipzig,  Archery Primus, Combat Archers and Siege

It should go without saying that we will be fighting as a group in
support of the Atlantian Army. We are making an effort at an organized
showing to kick off the war season.

Are you in the SCA and at GMU?

We are looking for anyone attending GMU.  We want to recruit there and perhaps start an on campus club.  We need at least six students.  At the moment we have two or three.

We are just trying to reach out and find names we can use right now, participation isn't required at the moment, though of course we will hope for it.

We will use this as a jumping off point for demos, use of school facilities, and of course growth for both the SCA in the area and the Northern Army.

But why have no Rapier Fighters showed?

We had a good showing.  Of course I want more as this will be a good base to add to the Ponte Alto Baronial Army and in extension the North Army.  Family and Friendship will lead to unit cohesion and people coming out to support each other, we will hopefully throw in a dash of loyality to the Kingdom.  Sir Syker teaching the new folks a structured class was excellent.  Viscount Eldred showing with his wife, who is a Pelican but I forget her name already but she is really sweet was excellent.  Eldred is doing a Monday night practice at his place in Sterling for those who can not get to College Park.  I of course want more Knights coming.  We have allot of folks who could be taking the next step but no one to take it with.  Even though I am not sure about the amount of room we would have I would really like to see the Rapier folks out,  I can not imagine that we have somehow not made them welcome.

Baron Max put the following out.

Hey all:

Thought I'd let you know and/or remind you again that we've managed to secure an indoor fighting, A&S, and general hanging-out and having-fun site on Sundays (at least through January and if it works out, through the whole Winter), and we'd love one and all to come and join in the fun whenever possible.

Our first Sunday event this week was a smashing success with over 20 fighters in attendance, 5 Knights, various observers, and at least 10 active participants in the Arts and Sciences room (where garb was made, arts were pursued, and fun was had by all).

The location is the Lemon Road Elementary School (same location as the Ponte Alto Thursday night practice) which is at 7230 Idylwood Road in Falls Church, VA (conveniently located on VA Route 7 off the intersections of routes 495 and 66 (see directions below).

While we have secured the site thanks to the generous donations of several Ponte Alto individuals, donations from participants are sought to enable continued use of the site (though if you're traveling from afar, are a starving college student, or are otherwise indisposed, we would much rather have you show up and join in the fun than worry about being able to donate).

We will begin practice at 1:30pm in the cafeteria with sparring/bear-pit, move to structured training session led by Sir Strykar, continue with melee practice and training either outside or in the gymnasium, and close with sparring/bear-pit by 4:30pm.

The teacher's lounge is available for our use for bardic, arts and sciences, garb-making, and other interests and was well-attended and well-used at our first Sunday this week.  We hope gentles will come and mix and mingle and pursue their arts and come and mix with the fighters as well.

Following the gathering, a large number of us typically head-out to local eating establishments for more fun time together at dinner.

If you have any questions or problems about the practice, please don't hesitate to email me at this or my work/blackberry email (max.nelson@gd-ais.com) or call me on my cell phone at 703-969-1848.

We hope one and all will consider joining us on Sundays whenever possible for some fun, some fighting, some mingling, some A&S, some eating, and some general mayhem.  If last Sunday was any indication, than nobody will be disappointed!

Thanks for your time, and I look hope to see you all there!

In Service,

Baron Max Von Halstern

But I AM more chivalric than thou!!!!!
That is why they made me a Knight.

I am not sure why people think the current Ponte Alto Discussion online is Drama, it is simply a discussion on weather there is a risk to the Barony supporting an indoor practice site for the next month or so that would be a benefit to the whole barony and not just the fighters.

With all of the details online for the Emergency Money folks to check out I also don't understand why people felt the need to call them at home on Christmas Eve.  Since two of the folks live together this takes like 2 phone calls I would think, one to the Coronets and one between the two houses handling this were the officers live.

While I do know the fact the I am a Knight in the SCA doesn't mean anything to the contract and the school, it does mean something in the discussion when i say I am going to put money up to defray the cost to the Barony and both my word and the word of the other fighters who said they would do this is doubted to try and make it seem like the Barony is taking a bigger risk then it actually is just because someone might not like the idea for whatever reason.

I really don't care if people like that I am speaking as a Knight  or not (Forgal has a good quote on this one) , as a Knight I am supposed to be bigger than life, a leader and speak out when I think something is the right thing to do, if that is throwing my belt around, good, it is what I am supposed to do.  I am certainly not going to sit back and not say anything when both my word and the other fighters words are doubted.

Asking about the process of how we are going to collect the funds and all the other details of a project is right and good, doubting a group of individuals words many of which are Knights with thinly veiled words on a public list is not, it is in fact insulting and I will  never allow something like that to go unanswered.
